Feminist Communities for Climate Justice launch groundbreaking Climate Justice Toolkits
Feminist Communities for Climate Justice (FCCJ), a joint project of the National Women's Council of Ireland (NWCI) and Community Work Ireland (CWI) officially launched two new resources that aim to act as conversation starters on the climate crisis and how it connects to the day to day lives of people and communities.
The two toolkits, funded by the Department's Community Climate Action Programme, will be a lasting legacy for this unique project, the first phase of which is due to end in December 2025. The toolkits are designed to be practical educational resources about climate change for community organisations of any kind.
Sadhbh O’Neill, FCCJ project lead said,
"The government’s climate action policies are not currently reaching many people, and ten years after the adoption of the Paris Agreement there is a worrying rise in disinformation and even climate denial. FCCJ’s baseline research has found that current policies do not adequately consider the social impacts of climate change, when we know that marginalised groups are more vulnerable to its effects. Technocratic and market-based instruments sideline the potentially transformative role of bottom-up climate action, especially for women and marginalised groups.
The FCCJ project aims to skill up grassroots organisations to shape and lead the solutions we need, so they can engage meaningfully in climate policy on an equal footing with policymakers. The toolkits will be vital in harnessing the power of feminist and community development approaches to mobilise, empower and engage communities in climate actions that benefit the most marginalised groups in Irish society. Without investing in capacity-building at a local level, communities simply will not be equipped or have the resources to respond to the single greatest challenge of our time.”
The first toolkit, ‘Creating Climate Justice Communities,’ is a resource for community workers and facilitators, providing them with essential information on how climate change affects the day-to-day lives of Irish communities with a specific focus on marginalised groups. The second, ‘Community Action for Feminist Climate Justice,’ offers hands-on tools and activities to help communities explore and implement feminist approaches to climate justice, allowing complex issues around the climate crisis to be connected to everyday lives and experiences.
Vanessa Conroy, Project Officer for the FCCJ project:
"These toolkits are exactly what is needed on the ground in communities. They don't just talk about climate change; they provide key information; clear, actionable steps; and highlight the disproportionate impact on those who are already marginalised. The focus on feminist climate justice is a powerful new lens to address everyday challenges faced by women and marginalised communities in areas such as transport, care, health and housing."

These new resources will also be made available as a live-streamed and recorded webinar.
